Thriller Conventions 2:

What are conventions?

They are the commonly used methods or the 'norms' that audiences expect to see when they watch a movie or show. For example,

The conventions for a Horror film would be:

1) Jump scares
2) A ghost or paranormal\supernatural entity or phenomena
3) Dead bodies and death
4) A group of teenage protagonists
5) A dark, horrifying past that explains how the ghost came into existence

The list above are examples of a few conventions an audience member would most likely see in a horror movie.

Thriller Conventions:

A thriller is a genre that involves an exciting plot and often features high-pace action and espionage.
They are, as the name suggests, movies that thrill audience members with the hero often engaging in high-risk gunfights and car chases.

There will also generally be a beautiful female protagonist that the hero ends up being involved with romantically.

A few example of successful thriller could be Legend, The man from U.N.C.L.E., The Expendables 1,2 and 3 and The James Bond movies.

When audience members go to watch a movie, they have certain expectations as to what the movie will feature such as ghosts in a horror movie. When the viewers decide to watch a thriller, here are the conventions that they will expect to see:

Action:
Thriller-type movies would not be great thrillers if they did not have action-packed sequences that leave the audience excited and wanting more. It is what the genre is built on. The action in thriller movies may involve anything ranging from hand-to-hand combat to gunfights. Most thrillers often utilise a wide array of action scenes to keep audience members happy and focused on the movie; this is also one of the main reasons why audience members will want to watch a thriller movie.

"Ya won't mind if I fight back will ya?"- Reggie Kray, before a massive brawl scene.

Espionage:
Espionage is massive part of the thriller industry. The idea of spies and special agents trained to fight villains and ensure that the world is safe intrigues almost every audience member, especially considering the array of special gadgets and tactics they use in the movies. One of the most successful spy\espionage movies would be the Bond series where Agent 007, James Bond goes against seemingly insurmountable odds (and triumphs) with the help of his agency, MI6.

"Bond, James Bond..."- James Bond, every James Bond film ever

Explosions:
Good thrillers will have a massive explosion scene...great thrillers will have plenty of them!!
Explosions on screen are always exciting to see, especially if it is the hero setting off charges to destroy the villains base or blow him out of the sky and who can forget the cool walk the protagonists do after blowing something up? Explosions play an essential role in creating effect and generating a mood of excitement in the audience. One of the main reasons why thrillers are so exciting and end in a bang.

Guns and Shootouts:
Thriller movies always have amazing gun fight scenes where the protagonists must deal with hordes of goons who work for the villain. These scenes are often the most exciting due to the amount of action that takes place, with heroes quickly dispatching enemies while dodging bullets at the same time. Audience members are always thrilled to watch these scenes because of the level of excitement it generates.

Deadly Protagonist and Villains:
Most thriller movies will have a heroic, miraculous protagonist who takes on all odds and defeats the villain in the end. The villain, however, may be equally skilled and as dangerous as the hero.
They often have an interesting backstory (often directly linked directly to each other) and are committed to stopping evil forces or destroying the peace (depending on the character). These characters can vary from being good or bad from the very beginning (James Bond,  Red Skull) or may change to become the hero or villain they were meant to be later on in the film.(Iron Man, Darth Vader). Regardless of the role they play, they often do manage to make an impact and stay in our hearts and minds.
Rey, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens finds out about her secret past and
that she is actually the daughter of Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and a Jedi herself.

"That name no longer has any meaning to me!", after being called Anakin Skywalker
by Luke Skywalker.

Intricate Plot:
Thrillers are known for having some of the most amazing, intricate plots in movie history.
While they might be based on historical facts (the story of the Kray brothers) or completely made up (James Bond), they always manage to keep the audience well entertained. The plots will commonly consist of something being stolen or a person of high importance being kidnapped and as the hero goes through various ordeals in order to defeat the bad guys, the movie may pick up and become more exciting. There maybe sudden plot twists such as the villain having a history with the hero or even going to as far as being the brother of the hero (The Accountant). These amazing twists and turns that keep audiences on their toes and constantly second-guessing is why thrillers are so successful.

These are some of the conventions we expect to see in thriller-genre based movies.
